Game shooting ban brought in by environment chiefs

Game shooting ban brought in by environment chiefs

Natural Resources Wales is to outlaw shooting on all the land it owns. It will stop leasing out land for game shoots from next year, when the current licences expire. The move comes after a long campaign by charity Animal Aid, and public pressure. A petition by Animal Aid gathered more than 12,700 signatures and the public consultation during a review of NRW land use for shooting found 76% of the 4,700 people who responded were in favour of a ban. At a board meeting today, NRW approved stopping game shooting on its land from March 1, 2019. Ahead of the meeting, Hannah Blythyn, Welsh government minister for the environment, wrote to NRW saying: "Whilst shooting on private land is for the landowner to decide, we need to take account of wider considerations and public views in considering what happens on the Welsh government estate. "Given the wider policy issues and concerns, the Welsh government does not support commercial pheasant shooting, or the breeding of gamebirds or the birds being held in holding pens on the estate prior to release on the Welsh government estate." Animal Aid Campaign Manager, Fiona Pereira said: "This is a wonderful victory for the people of Wales and for the birds who are purpose-bred and cruelly used as feathered targets for shooters. Our campaign has proven that the vast majority of people abhor the killing of animals for 'sport' and want no part of it. "We are delighted that the Welsh government has stepped in to ensure that animal cruelty has no place on public land. "NRW now has the opportunity to use that land for positive, educational, conservation and leisure activities that are inclusive and that are kind to animals and to the environment. "We hope that NRW will become a role model to other public bodies that also want to bring about an end to the shooting of birds. But the British Association for Shooting and Conservation said the decision was flawed. Spokesman Garry Doolan said: "BASC is astounded that the position of Natural Resources Wales, an evidence-based organisation, can be changed by the petitioning of such groups. Today’s decision strikes at the very credibility of NRW. "The Environment Minister for Wales, Hannah Blythyn, has pandered and has then imposed a position onto NRW, contrary to the evidence produced by a comprehensive review and public consultation into the future of shooting on Welsh public land. "This decision has serious implications for jobs and the environment in Wales. It should be derided by every individual who believes in the right of the individual to undertake lawful shooting. This is not just an issue for Wales; it is an issue for the very future of shooting in the UK. "Shooting is worth £75 million annually to the Welsh economy, it invests £7.4 million in the maintenance and enhancement of natural resources each year and supports the equivalent of 2,400 full-time jobs in the country."
